About the Serious Illness Care Programme UK
- Evidence shows that when people talk to their health professionals and explain what’s important to them in their lives and their goals, they feel more in control, are less likely to feel depressed or anxious and have a better experience – i.e. better conversations lead to better care.
- The Serious Illness Care Programme UK is a unique, patient-centred initiative that will achieve better care by providing a framework for meaningful conversations between patient and clinician, and then personalising care around the patient’s goals and priorities.
- The Serious Illness Care Programme UK is a partnership led by The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust (Merseyside, UK), with The Marie Cure Palliative Care Institute Liverpool (University of Liverpool, UK) and Ariadne Labs (Boston, USA).
- The UK Programme is based on the work of Dr Atul Gawande, Professor Susan Block and the team at Ariadne Labs in Boston USA.. The Harvard-based team are global leaders in health system innovation. They have been implementing the serious illness care programme across the US and internationally with good results.
- The Programme is different from anything tried in the UK before and will see health professionals develops skills, knowledge and confidence in helping patients talk about things that are important to them and in planning for their future.
- The UK Programme is underpinned by robust monitoring and evaluation. There is a five year research strategy underway to develop the evidence base, which will support expansion of Programme across the country.
- The high quality, research-led implementation will maximise benefits for both patients and their families and for healthcare staff involved in both systems change and in face-to-face conversations, ensuring safe and effective roll-out across the NHS.
